Shtetl Band

Village Klezmer is feelingmusic from the rich culture of the Jewish shtetl. Almost wiped out and considered lost, but coming back in the 21st century. With the program 'The Bride's Waltz' brings the Shtetl Band Amsterdam this village music in a refreshing way back to life in a program of listening and dancemusic. With merriment without agitation and sadness without Schmaltz.

Many people know the klezmersound played by large groups with lots of horns. But for centuries it was a different klezmersound that dominated the Eastern European Jewish folk music. It was the villagesound of a small ensemble. With the melody of the violin as a basis, this groupsound is very mild, rich and nuanced. Groups and musicians like Budowitz Di Naye Kapelye, Alicia Svigals and Veretski Pass give the old sound a new place in the klezmerspectrum and bring it to the concert stage. Shtetl Band Amsterdam has also quickly become a passionate and wanted performer of the Village Klezmer style. The musicians found instruments that match the sound of a village orchestra: a small accordion and bass, a bass drum with attached cymbal (poyk) and a hornviolin.
